frustrated kitten owner

my eight month old kitten has recently started pooping on the kitchen floor, especially at night while everyone is sleeping. We have never had any trouble before he has used his litter box since the day we brought him home almost 6 months ago. We make sure the litter box is always clean. What should we do?
