not using his litter box

i have a cat that is almost 2 years old and uses his litter box but also urinates right next to the litter box in front of our bedroom door leading to outside. what could this mean??

Well there could be several reasons. the first is that he has a urinary infection or it is behavioural caused by some upset in the house which is making him feel unhappy or insecure and is using the urine as a scent marker.
