bald painful spot on my cat

My Cat came home after being out side and has a bald spot on his neck/back??? He is acting like it painful and looks irratated. Please help he is so sad!

If the bald spot just suddenly appeared then it is likely that he may have been in a cat fight and some of his fur has been pulled off. this would be painful.
