How does a cat break his spine?

the same way anyone would really, by being hit by a car, by being kicked very hard, by being sat on or squashed in some way or even I would imagine by falling awkwardly.

I hope you are not asking for any sinister reason or suspect your cat has the injury. Any suspected injuries need to be investigated urgently by a vet. Sometimes in some cases what looks like a broken spine may just be a temporary paralysis, but as I say a vet must be seen urgently.
