Cat howls before and after bowel movement

My cat howls deeply before he has a bowel movement, and when he is finished, he runs out of the box, through the house, and proceeds to scootch his rear on the carpet, also while howling. What could be the cause of this?

Hi well it sounds to me like he must have some discomfort in that area. It could be constipation i.e hard stools

or he may have blocked anal glands. This is something av vet would have to deal with.

If this situation continues and you feel that it is not constipation then a trip to the vets is the best option.
