cat licking wall

my male cat has been licking the chipping paint off the basement wall. why would he do that?

Some cats are attracted to some chemicals , antifreeze being one of them and paint. Unfortunately it as you know is poisonous and should not be ingested, so you will need to try and stop your cat from doing this. If you can;t take off the loose paint chips then try squirting the wall with a strong citrus smell to try and deter him.
