My cat is 5 years old and within the last year or so he has decided to use the carpet to poo on. He pees in his litterbox but will not poo in there. I have tried everything..... cleaning carpets with cleaners in hopes he won't like the smell and keep going there, using pet deterrant, showing his mess to him and then putting him in the litterbox. I'm at my witts end and don't know what else to do. He can't keep doing this. Please help me come up with some sort of solution.

Cats use their faeces as another way of spreading their scent, just like when cats urinate. However when they use their faeces it is a more serious message as it is also a visual message and is usually only used when the cat feels very insecure and is desperately trying to mark their territory. The behaviour is called Middening. See my page about cat poo under the cat urine problems pages for more info on this.
