Cat pooing in the house

Hi there

I moved to my new house in April. I have 2 cats, mother and son, aged 14 and 12. They settled down straight away and I could leave the doors open because they had a wander and came straight back in. The problem started with the female after a few days - she started pooing and weeing in the same spot nearly every day, and more recently she has started doing it upstairs on the landing? She is a bit of a loner, always has been, and she stares at me all the time, but she will come and sit on my lap every night and she purrs, etc. This is very frustrating because she does go outside a lot - so why is she doing this? Any comments/suggestions would be very helpful?

Thanks- Kirstin James

This behavior is called Middening and is used as a sort of signal to other cats and it also helps to make the cat feel more secure in its environement by spreading it's scent around. Please read my page about this under my cat urination heading here on this site, it will provide you with more info on this subject.
