cat poop all over my yard

could a feral cat be leaving little mounds of poop ALL OVER my backyard

yes quite possibly as this can be used a territory marker too.

It may even be several cats trying to claim the same territory which would explain the various mounds.

There are some safe cat powders you can buy to sprinkle which is supposed to help deter them. They are probably available from either the pet store or your local gardening center.
