Cat poop on carpet

I have a 13yr old female cat...She has been the only cat in the house for the past 5 years. Recently, in the past year or so in the middle of the night I will wake up to her making really loud meowing growls. They can be rather deep growls and not her normal meow...shortly after this she will then poop on the floor. I don't understand why she does this and why she doesn't go to her litter box. It like she gets in a spell or something and just goes where she is. Is this a behavioral thing or a health thing??

hi well it could either be caused by something which is frightening her perhaps a animal outside etc and she is therefore scent marking her territory. please see this page for more on this

or it may be age related. Sometimes as cats get older they get a form of dementia and night time is often the time when they become most confused etc.

It is most likely the first option though.
