cat poops outside box

We just recently, about 2 weeks ago, rescued a 4 year old male neutered cat. We have a large breed dog also. The cat at first was fine, he ate normally, and used his litter box. All the sudden, he is urinating and pooping just outside the box. I know the litter is clean because I scoop it everyday. ( I use clumping litter)I also use a covered box. Please help, My boyfriend is threatening to get rid of him.

Hi don't worry this is a common problem and is fixable, you just have to understand why the cat is doing it.

basically your cat is using his urine scent to make his home smell more like him which helps to calm him down and make him feel more comfortable.

i have written a page about this issue which you may find of further interest. It also describes a process called the confinement process which helps your cat gain confidence in a smaller area and to get used to their litter tray again.

here is the page
