cat scratching a lot and has scabs

by callieangelbuffy

My calico female cat who is spayed is around 5 years old but she's suddenly started to act strangely. Around 2 months ago she started scratching herself a lot more then usual and quickly after I started to notice scabs appearing on her head, back of her neck, ears, and especially under chin. She's always had a bit of a acne problem but nothing like this. It was pretty bad and eventually my mom had to take her to the vet without me because my schedule wasn't open. The vet gave her some type of steroid shot I think but wasn't exactly sure wat was wrong. It stopped for a while but a few weeks ago she started scratching a lot and the scabs are popping back up again. She's constantly meowing at me like she's in pain but I can't tell wats wrong. She's a healthy indoor cat who loves her food and in my opinion is a little on the chubby side but recently it looks like she's losing weight even though she's still eating the same amount. She seems like she's really cold and is constantly trying to dig under some blanket or something. She calms down if I touch her though but then starts acting up if I stop. I think she's also losing hair and its still winter but it could just be because of the scratching. I don't know what's wrong with her and I'm really worried about her.

Hi so we can rule out a parasite problem as the vet would have seen this when you visited.

The other two possible causes is either a cat allergy to something she has come into contact with

Or she is over grooming which is brought on my anxiety

The trouble is telling the difference.

I have a page about general sin issues which you may find helps you to discover the possible case here

However if you really are at a loss then the only thing you can do is to go back to the vets and ask them to take another look. There may be further tests they can carry out or they may be able to help you work out the cause with questioning which sometimes brings up something you may not have thought of.

Please read my pages to see if they help to highlight the possible cause.

best wishes Kate
