All cats do this sort of behavior, although it is not fully understood it is beleived that it stems back to the days when they would knead their mothers tummy for milk. As an adult it is used as a sort of comforter and is often done when they are about to settle down and get cosy.
There is no way of preventing your cat from doing this, it is an instinct and completely harmless. usuall they will only do it for a little while and if you just move then a little they will often stop or go and do it elsewhere.
My own cat little Mo always does it when she is settling down but stops shortly after.
