Chandler our cat
Hi My 12 year old short hair male cat who’s an indoor/outdoor cat- Primarily indoor he goes out for short periods of time and only roams around our yard. He recently started defecating and urinating upstairs in dining room which he always used the litter box before... he also has an increased appetite is always hungry and eats his dry food plus up to 2 cans a day!! He is not gaining weight. Also doesn’t happen every day but he keeps his mouth open and nothing comes out like he is panting or trying to meow- then this last for few minutes and stops.. he doesn’t seem like he is in any pain. Also he did have fleas recently even with using frontline he picked them up- so we also used another flea spray to rid them which seem to work.... What can be wrong with Chandler? Thanks!

Hi
I am not a big fan of the flea sprays as they contain insecticides also they do not solve the flea issue but just kill the fleas on the cat at the time, whereas the frontline drops prevent fleas from living on the cat at all.
The fact that he may have picked up a few fleas could simply be that they got on him from outside but they should not have been there for long as the frontline would deter them from staying as it were.
As for your cats other problem, well eating a lot and not putting on weight could be a sign of an thyroid problem. One of my own cats had this problem which had to be treated with medication. Please see my page on my site here for more information on this
cat-thyroidHowever there could be other causes and so i would recommend that you take your cat to see a vet sooner rather than later. If it is a thyroid problem then the sooner it is caught the easier it is to treat.
Also mention to the vet about the flea spray and the breathing issue, this may have just been a reaction to the spray or may be connected with your cats health issue.
I hope your cat is better soon and back to his old self again.
Best wishes kate
