Depressed Kitty Cats

November here in the UK has been wet and cold and basically grim weather for all concerned and that includes our cats Byron and Shelley.
Both cats have been thoroughly miserable and spend a lot of their day either looking out at the grey wet weather or curled up on our leaps which is a sure sign that it's cold.
Shelley suffers the most when the weather is really bad as he is very much a cat who likes the good comfortable life. Whereas Byron will at least venture outside for an hour or so and come back al wet and bedraggled now and again.
So our duty as good cat parents has been to try and raise the spirits of our two cats, we hate to see them so down. We do this mainly by rotating the toy box and spending lots of time on our hands and knees throwing balls, dragging string and tossing well chewed toy mice in the air. Great fun for the cats but not so much for our aging knee caps.
Roll on spring when i'm sure we won't see our cats for dust for many hours each day and then we'll be moaning that we don't we see them much. I don't know it really is hard being a worrying cat mum and dad.
Any tips on toys which keep your cats happy for ages?
