Foul Smell coming from my cat

by Lisa
(Kane, PA)

I have a female kitty, Olivia, who is 6 months old. Recently I have noticed a foul smell on the furniture and tonight I smelled it on Olivia's fur on her back. It smells like dirty feet or "butt". I know that cats are generally very clean and that they clean themselves, which she does often. I have had many cats in my life but have never encountered this problem. It's not coming from her mouth and it's not anal secretions either. Just don't understand why she smells. She is an indoor cat so she couldn't have gotten into anything. I'm always on my boyfriends case because we have a "smelly" dog and now he is having a field day with me about the cat smelling. What could it possibly be and what can I do about it. Thank you so much for any advise you may have. Lisa

Hi well it can only be from either her licking herself or if the dog lives with you is the dog licking her. i can't think of any other causes if you say it is not coming from her behind.

Is she spayed? At 6 months she could be having her first period of heat but generally there is no smell associated with this in particular. But it may be a hormonal change which may have caused this.

perhaps give her a light bath and see if the problem happens again. In which case you may want to have her checked by a vet for any other underlining illness.

best wishes Kate
