frightened cat

my cat sleeps in a basket outside the bedroom door & lastnight he suddenly jumped out of the basket & when I got up he was frightened of something but I couldn,t find anything so I took him to bed with me. This morning he is no better & wouldn't leave the bedroom & was crouched on the floor & when I coughed he jumped in the air with fright. I,ve had him 7 years & have never seen him act like this.

well it is impossible to say what could cause this sudden change in behavior. He may have heard something or even smelt something that has made him feel uneasy. To the human eye and nose it is often impossible for us to discover what this could be.
Watch him for a day or so and if his behavior remains the same or if more sysmptoms arise like not eating etc then i would get him checked by a vet to rule out any medical condition that may have caused his behavior to change.
