Gender biased cat

Actually a couple of questions:

1). I'm told this may be submission of trust, but when my cat just throws herself on the floor (And I mean she literally throws herself down hard, often head first) and rolls around, is this a sign of trust?

Answer: well if she does it in front of you and rolls around on her back showing you her belly, then yes it is. It is allowing you access to the most vulnerable part of their body and so they are saying i trust you and you are the boss.

2). Also my cat, while wary of visitors and strangers seems to adore male company but will stay away from my mum with the exception of wanting something. We have reason to believe her previous owners may have mistreated her but I don't know if this is a contributing factor. Any ideas?

Answer: I don't know if this is a scent thing also but some cats do prefer one sex over another. As you say it may also be done to previous life experience which has made them weary of certain sexes.

My female cat used to prefer men, however my two male cats now seem not to have a preference.
