My cat is yowling most of the day and night

My cat is approx 10 months old. Given to us by a friend who told us it was a male. Recently it has begun yowling, crouching down on its front legs to the floor, bum in the air and paddling its back feet. This is day and night. It want to go out then in, then out... again and again. It sound like its in lots of pain. Then suddenly it begins playing with something for a few minutes, all is normal. Then its back to the yowling again. Is it in pain? Is my male cat actually female and on heat? This is the 2nd full day with this noise and 2 sleepless nights so far. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks!

has the cat been neutered? It sounds like it may not have, in which case this is normal male cat behavior, calling for mates. having him neutered will stop this.

Also he is very young and so will be full of energy and will need lots to keep him happy and stimulated mentally. So making sure that he has lots to keep him occupied when in the house is important. See here for more details

If not neutered i would book an appointment with the vets for a check up to make sure that he is healthy generally and discuss having him neutered.
