my boy has been missing for 6 days now. should i assume hes gone for good?

No not definitely.

I have heard of cats going missing for much longer than that. In fact my sister lost her cat after owning him for just two days. he went missing for two weeks, then just calmly turned up, even though he hadn't lived there long.
