what would cause our kitten of 5 months to all of a sudden to not want to be social with us and be afraid of going into our bedroom, he was very vocal, and now he is quiet and hiding all the time, he eats, plays, and drinks his water,

It sounds like something has frightened him. It can be difficult to know what caused this.

generally your cat should relax over time but you could perhaps help him with some bonding sessions. Described here
