Recently Spayed Female Cat Problem

by Megan

My 2 ½ year old female cat was spayed just over a week ago. She has spent her entire life with my 5 year old neutered cat. Almost exactly one week after my female cat was fixed she became extremely aggressive towards my male cat. The first incident happened in the middle of the night so I am unaware of what may truly be the cause. I have now separated the cats and have made a handful of attempts to reunite them with no luck. Prior to these outbursts from my female cat these two cats use to be very close, playing together grooming each other etc. I am worried about them ever getting along again. I don’t know what else to do at this point.

Hi
Don't worry this is a common occurrence that happens from time to time. My own cats have periods like this too.

basically something has frightened your female cat and she is taking her fear out on the other cat. is is known as aggression truama.

You will need to take your cats through a period of re introduction to allow them to re build their confidence in each other. it will also give your female cat time to relax and calm down after her recent surgery etc.

i have written a web page about aggression truama and also how to re introduce your cats to each other. it does take a little time and effort but is well worth it in the end. here is the page

I just wanted to let you know that I followed your advice and things are beginning to return to normal. My two cats are starting to play together again and eating together. I am very happy about the progress they have made and thankful that I don't have to find a new home for either one of my cats. Thank you so much for your help and advice!
