screaming cat

My cat is about 18 or 19 years old. She has recently started screaming day and night. She walks around the basement and screams...then comes upstairs and screams. She is very loud and keeps us awake. We did have another cat but he died 2 1/2 years ago. They were really close. After his death, she stayed by herself in the basement. She has become more social in the past year. We also have a basset hound. She used to hate him but now likes him. She also does not use the litter box regularly. She prefers to use our unfinished basement floor. She does not seem to be in any pain. I don't know what to do. Please help. Thanks.

Hi well your cat is indeed a old lady and like a lot of old people as they may begin to suffer some form of dementia. This can result in strange behaviours and i would suggest that this is perhaps what is happening here.
I have a web page about senior cats which may help to explain dome of the symptoms etc better, here is the page

Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done if dementia is the cause. i would however always recommend that you have her checked out by a vet to eliminate any possible underlining illness which may be involved with the change in behaviours etc.
best wishes Kate
