Stooling as separation anxiety?

by M

My cat is 5 years old and has always spent a lot of time home alone. In the past few months, he has been stooling in inappropriate locations while I am gone. It is generally on my bed, and he usually makes an attempt to cover it with a blanket. He will do this when I am gone for a week or a day, but the pattern is inconsistent. I don't know why he would have developed separation anxiety at this point. Also, how do I remove the odor? Thank you!

Hi
well yes it may separation anxiety but this sort of behaviour is not uncommon and can be triggered by all sorts of reason. From changes in the home, routine, new people around, new animals around outside, new smells, etc etc. the behaviour is an attempt by your cat to make his home smell more like him which in turn helps to make him feel more settled and happy at home. the behaviour is known as Middening.

Please see my web page about this issue here

As for the smell. Clean the area with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and water, then when the area is dry sprinkle dry bicarbonate of soda on the area and leave for an hour or so before sweeping up. this is a very good odour remover.

best wishes Kate
