Tom cat trying to mate with fixed female cat

i have a 9 month old unfixed male and a 15 week old fixed female why is the male trying to mount the female?

Hi well this is an easy answer, because he is full of male hormones driving him to follow his natural instincts. It has even been known for fixed male cats to try to mate with females and this is due only to the instinct and not the hormones, so your little guy is packed with both.

Your male cat will continue to seek out mates until he is fixed and this could mean that he shows other behaviors such as caterwauling, distructive behavior (due to frustration) and spraying for scent marking.
