We rescued this cat , we have had her for 5 years now, & she just stopped using the litter box. She will go everywhere except the box. We have changed the litter, the location of the box. The type of box. Everything. !! Still she will not use one. We put her in the garage with a few of our other cat's , because we have it all set up for them to be able to run along the side of the house, & feel the great outdoors safely. THANK YOU

Hi i am not sure if I have fully understood your question. Are you saying that she has started this behaviour since being put with the other cats or did you do this after the behaviour began?

My best advice would be to ask you to take a look at my web page about some of the possible causes of this behaviour and how to try and help the cat. It sounds to me like she may be scent marking her territory due to the other cats or perhaps to the changes of being moved etc. Any way here is the page, it should be able to answer some of your questions.

Same problem

I have the same problem with one of my cats. I rescued two sisters. At about 4 or 5 years old only one of them stopped using the litter box. I tried everything I could think of. They are now 9, and I'm still battling.

The only thing that seemed to make the slightest difference is I changed from a tall-sided litter box to buy a plain storage Rubbermaid box instead, which has much shorter sides. She goes in that sometimes, but not others. It's still hit or miss.

If you have carpet, try putting flattened garbage bags beneath your litter boxes, at least a foot out from the box. I also bought a small carpet steamer and use that on the soiled spot immediately after spraying it with liquid odor remover.

LItter box??????

Our cats both about 13 years old have always used the litter box but now for some unknown reason, they'll only go outside or if inside, will go in the basement and 4 feet from the littlr box go. No explanation. The box has been cleaned with fresh litter and after 13 years they've gone on strike, any idea's to help these critters?
